Troy Causey Jr., a 6-6 forward for Wilmer-Hutchins High School, dreamed of playing college basketball. Promised better opportunities and a chance to pursue his basketball goals, Causey's family sent him to live at a house in the Wilmer-Hutchins attendance zone, in violation of recruiting rules. He lived there with a cousin and two other boys, including top Madison High School basketball player Johnathan Turner.
Police say Causey was fatally beaten after he and Turner got into an argument over a video game.
Causey's death triggered an investigation into Dallas ISD recruiting that led to the firing of 15 athletic employees.
Causey's mother, Tammy Simpson, has spoken out about Dallas ISD recruiting, accusing Dallas ISD of treating her son like a commodity, and about the handling of the criminal case.
