Police say 27-year-old Maria Isabel Romero Medina died at the Denton insurance and tax business where she worked.
Police issued an arrest warrant for her ex-boyfriend and the father of her son, 23-year-old Ricardo Martinez. Authorities believe Martinez fled the country with their 4-year-old son, Ricardo Alekzander Lara, who has been missing since his mother's death.
Police didn't release many details about Medina's death, citing the ongoing search for the suspect and her son. She had recently been trying to end Martinez's custody rights, but police said they didn't know how contentious the legal battle was.
Acquaintances remember Medina as a loving mother who always seemed happy despite the challenges of raising a son alone, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported. When she came to work at Sanchez Insurance and Tax, they say she checked the mail and chatted with business owners in the building. She often had her son with her, the newspaper reported.
"To be honest, it's been hard for us, especially with her working here," Eddie Ramirez, who owns a hair salon in the same building where Medina often brought her son for a haircut, told the paper. "I don't feel comfortable anymore. This is a terrible thing."
The missing boy is 3 feet tall, weighs 55 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. His father is described as 5-foot-5 and 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
